Reading cuts stress by nearly 70%, outperforming music or walking. 🧘

The 5-page rule to get back into it without forcing yourself. 📖

Thirty minutes a day, and your brain ages better. 🧠

What is a leader? What a general taught me about management

I read “Qu’est-ce qu’un chef ?” by General Pierre de Villiers, looking for a military manual. I found a lesson in management. 📖

Authority is not authoritarianism: it’s about growing your people, telling the truth, and keeping technology at the service of humans.

Five ideas I’ve been applying ever since with my teams, and that hold up better than most training courses.

The most portable body I’ve ever had in my hands, but €1,570 and barely 300 shots. 📸

The real issue: lenses designed for pros, which makes them way too big for this camera.

Autofocus is still lagging behind Sony, and the film simulation dial is a missed opportunity.

A catch-up WWDC: Apple is fixing its blunders (Liquid Glass, performance, AirDrop) rather than innovating. 🩹

Siri 2.0 and local Apple Intelligence… but with an iCloud+ subscription to enjoy it limit-free. 🤨

The only real takeaway: the passwords app that automatically replaces weak ones. 🔐

When you know that Orange charges €10 just to transfer an eSIM from one iPhone to another, you start thinking the good old physical SIM card still has a bright future ahead… Apple wants to turn us all into videographers with their iPhone. Key takeaways: better heat dissipation 🔥, better battery life: the Pro now matches last year’s Pro Max, which seems like the only real justification for the upgrade.

🕰️ A lazy update. The iPad mini has never been the star of the lineup. 🤖⏳ 👀 A screen that hurts your eyes. If you’ve never experienced an OLED screen or 120 Hz, the iPad mini’s display might not bother you. The iPad mini 7 doesn’t offer the nano-texture glass of the iPad Pro M4. But what is Apple playing at with the iPad mini? This tablet carries a premium price tag… for budget-tier specs. 💸

I’ve already published an article on the differences between the Apple Watch Ultra and the Garmin Epix Pro Gen 2 — you can find it right here
. Since then, I’ve decided to give Garmin a real shot by testing the Fenix 8 (47mm).

🎯 Goal: keep it for at least a year to see whether its sports features are genuinely indispensable or just gadgetry.

📆 The year’s plan

During this period, I’m planning:

Hardware Battery life: There’s no comparison between the two watches — the Garmin easily outpaces the Apple Watch. With the Apple Watch, I can leave the house without my phone and still: open or close my connected garage door, pay with Apple Pay, stream music, make calls or receive texts. Apple Watch shortcomings: Offline mapping is a big gap for the Apple Watch.

I’m attempting a completely crazy challenge 🤣 — I’m going to take the majority of my photos this year with my iPhone. I usually make a photo book each year. Up to now, mobile shots were in the minority; this year they’ll be the majority, so I’ll be able to compare the difference in quality. Applying filters — I’m experimenting with black and white photography, and indoors the overall phone photo quality is terrible…

Since the iPhone 12, Apple has released a new type of accessory based on MagSafe. You no longer need a clamp that devours 🍽 your phone 📞, it’s a real time-saver and the convenience makes it an essential accessory — and yet… Yes on paper this mount is great, but look a little closer and it doesn’t actually support charging… But why stop at a simple magnet 🧲 when adding wireless charging would have changed everything…

Let me tell you about the best writing app on Mac. You can export your notes in several formats: ePub, pdf, docx, text, html, blog. For each export format you can associate a template — the default templates are nice for ePubs. As you’ve probably gathered from the start of this article, I’m a huge fan of this software. I know plenty of Markdown writing apps, but Ulysses gives me the best user experience.

Since the release of iOS 14, Apple has gone all in 📦 on accessibility settings. If you want to get the most out of your AirPods experience (it also works with Beats headphones 🎧) I suggest you head into Settings: You’ll hear 👂 a number of sounds and will need to answer which version you prefer. Only 😢 regret: the experience isn’t the same when I listen to something on the Mac, which doesn’t have the same feature.

To truly nail it and get the perfect mouse, the next version would need to merge the features of the Master with the ergonomics of the Vertical — and then you’d have, in my opinion, the perfect mouse for long sessions in front of a screen.

Here’s a really handy KeySearch extension that lets you, via a keyword you define, launch a search on your favourite site. Say you want to search YouTube: you can register the keyword “yt” followed by what you’re looking for to immediately fire off the search without having to go to the site first and then type in the search field. But if you want to use Safari, because let’s be honest it’s…

For a while now I’ve been making my own bread. A bread machine isn’t ideal for getting a good crusty loaf like from the bakery — it turns out more of a sandwich loaf than a proper bakery bread. Close the pot and put it in the oven at 40°C for an hour, then 45 minutes at 240°C; you can take the bread out of the pot and keep browning the top in the oven for a few more minutes if you like.

So, why install Edge on a Mac when Safari’s integration (forced?) with Mac and iOS devices is so seamless?
The Dali io-4 is the brand’s first wireless headphone; the Dali io-6 sets itself apart by including active noise cancellation. The Dali doesn’t have multipoint connection, but a single button press is all it takes to switch sources — much faster than the Sony… The Dali io-4 doesn’t come with a hard carry case, unlike its older sibling the io-6, which costs €100 more…

On my Synology I simply enabled sharing via the FTP protocol and since then I can play 4K films on Infuse on my Apple TV 4K.
After my first-generation AirPods died (the battery won’t hold a charge anymore), I ventured outside the Apple ecosystem to try the competition. I tested 4 pairs: the Jabra Elite 65t Active, the Bose Soundsport Free (while waiting for their replacement next year), the Sony WF-1000XM3, and finally the AirPods Pro. Time to choose: if all your devices are Apple, go for the AirPods Pro. If you’re on Android, the Sony are excellent but annoying to switch between sources. The best value for money? The Jabra.

On the Apple 🍏 side, when Catalina launched, Apple blew up its iTunes monolith into several separate apps, including Apple Music and Apple Podcast. You can access the same podcasts from the Spotify app as from Apple’s, but unlike Apple everything lives in one single app. It’s not yet possible to build such a playlist today, but I think the demand is there — and in a market-driven world, it’ll happen sooner or later, and much faster at Spotify than at Apple.

I’m a big fan of Peak Design products. But the anchor system is too bulky — the plastic buckles are way too large and get in the way even when I want to grab the camera to take a shot. Ironically I bought this strap precisely because its anchor system doesn’t rub against the camera body, so it wouldn’t scratch it — yet with this strap it’s the length-adjustment mechanism that ends up doing the scratching.

If you’re a BetterTouchTool fan like me, you’re probably already using it. Take a look: I like having emojis permanently in front of me to drop into my texts (yes, I know, I’m a child) 🤷‍♂️ I also added the date — just like Pock allows — but unlike Pock, BetterTouchTool lets you configure the format however you want. The battery widget is available too, though it’s slightly less polished than on Pock…

Pock is an app you install on your Mac — ideally with a Touch Bar, otherwise it’s kind of pointless 😉 Once installed, you can bring your dock up into the Touch Bar. This widget lets you pause (one tap), go back to the previous track (swipe left), or skip to the next (swipe right). Nothing revolutionary, but Pock gives the Touch Bar a clean, elegant look…

Still in my series searching for earbuds to replace my late AirPods, here’s my take on the Bose SoundSport Free after my brief test of the Jabra 65t Elite Active. The case opens one-handed and the earbuds are held magnetically 🧲 This case lets you recharge the earbuds twice in theory, for a total listening time of 15 hours.
The Jabra Elite Active 65t are here to replace my old AirPods, which gave up the ghost after just over two years. The hinge, compared to the AirPods case, feels cheap — the coating is pleasant to the touch but the case as a whole seems fragile. I put them through all kinds of activities and couldn’t fault them — they stay put, really well, even when sweating 😅 Another strong point is how discreet they look when you’re wearing them…

The development problem — First of all, Apple does everything to get young people into coding, yet it’s still not possible to develop properly on iOS. And the worst part: that web version runs horribly on Safari iOS… Try correcting a slightly long text and you’ll see the scroll issues.
The Apple Watch and I have had a love-hate relationship since day one. With its built-in GPS, it does the job of a sports watch and doesn’t cost much more than a dedicated device (like the Garmin Fenix) while offering extra features.
After Android, I had to try Chrome OS to form my own opinion — and I wasn’t disappointed. This system really isn’t aimed at people who edit photos in Photoshop or videos in Final Cut, but rather at people who spend their lives on Facebook, Deezer… I think it’s the right system for the majority of people, but it doesn’t replace a primary computer running Mac OS or Windows.
A look at my favourite new camera, cute and compact… my precious little Sony A7r. On this point I’m stepping down from the Alpha 77, which had a fully articulating screen and especially let you take selfies or record yourself while seeing the result directly on the screen facing you.
Review of the LG Pad 8.3 tablet

A former Apple addict, I’m increasingly drawn to the products of the formidable Big Brother: Google. Battery life: this is a weak point of the tablet, and a weak point of many Android devices too. Battery life is slightly worse than on the Nexus 7, which is a shame because I already found the Nexus a bit tight. At €250 I think this tablet is better than the Nexus 7, but if you have to pay full price, you’re probably better off going with the Nexus.
