I don’t know about you, but when I have a lot of windows open I sometimes go crazy trying to get back to the one I want. This problem is made even more annoying by some apps — like Microsoft Teams, to name no names — that refuse to come to the foreground when you hit ⌘ + ⇥.

To solve all your window management problems I encourage you to use this wonderful app Contexts .

Replace your Dock

For me it has completely replaced my Dock. Now I can see all open apps and even each window of the same app.

For example, if I have several Notion windows open, I can select the one I want directly! It’s a real time-saver — indispensable, you might say, by the end of a workday.

The app is fully configurable — you can assign a shortcut to the app-switching menu. You can have as many different menus as you like, and they can restrict which windows show up: for example, only windows currently open, or only those on a specific desktop.

For me, ⌘ + ⇥ shows the switcher across all windows, and ⌘ + <, the switcher for the windows of the same app.

I love the ability to show minimised windows and have them come to the front when I select them from the menu.

A subtle feature lets you hide a window — for example, Teams constantly shows me two windows and drives me mad, because clicking on the “Notification” window does absolutely nothing!

So boom, we get rid of it:

You can activate the app-switching menu by swiping on the trackpad — it’s even faster than hitting ⌘ + ⇥!

Finally, you can search for a window directly by name. The menu has a search field so you can look up the window you’re after!

No downsides 🙈?

I’d say the main downside is the update cadence — it has to be said that as of writing these lines the app hasn’t been updated since… 2018 😨.

The current version v3.7 is perfectly functional on Big Sur and Apple Silicon, but I do have a few annoying graphical bugs.

Otherwise the price is pretty reasonable — count on €10 for this utility that’s quickly going to join my list of must-haves. One wish though: why not include it in the SetApp subscription 🤔?
