Is the 2019 MacBook keyboard really that bad?

The infamous keyboard. I had a 2015 MacBook, so the first generation of butterfly keyboards. Ah, the lovely emoji Touch Bar 😂 The Touch Bar was criticized for a long time, yet when I'm writing I love being able to use it for autocorrect like on the iPad. In the Unix terminal, you use that key regularly, but it's not natural to reach for it offset up and to the left — you need some adjustment time.

The infamous keyboard

I had a 2015 MacBook, so the first generation of butterfly keyboards. At first I found it rather pleasant to type on — I like the shallow key travel. On the other hand, I’m not the type to pound the keyboard hard, because I hate making noise when I type. But with that keyboard, even typing lightly, the keys made an enormous amount of noise.

After 4 years with very little change — though the third generation is a thing — I find the new keyboard is perfect. The typing is much quieter. Time will tell if that holds up, but I’m completely satisfied!

To be fair, let’s all agree that this new keyboard is still a catastrophic evolution and the competition has far surpassed Apple when it comes to laptop quality.

Ah, the lovely emoji Touch Bar 😂

The Touch Bar was criticized for a long time, yet when I’m writing I love being able to use it for autocorrect like on the iPad. It’s genuinely my favorite feature.

I wrote two articles here and there where, with the help of two pieces of software, you can extend the Touch Bar’s functionality. I’m a big fan of having emojis and the time 🕰 permanently in view!

Not everything is perfect

To be honest, I have to mention the downsides too. I only see one: that cursed Escape key that’s no longer flush left. In the Unix terminal you use it constantly, and reaching for it offset up and to the left just isn’t natural — it takes some getting used to.
