I started enjoying reading — not on paper books, but on an e-reader. Back then I bought a Kobo that I found excellent. I devoured a lot of books with it.
When I found out you could easily remove the DRM from books bought on Amazon, I switched to a Kindle . Not that I enjoy pirating books, but it’s unthinkable for me not to be able to share a purchased book with my wife. I got into the habit of stripping the DRM from my books to archive them on my NAS .
My first Kindle was the first-generation Oasis . I was a huge fan of that model — it came with a cover that had a built-in battery.
The idea was to double the battery life while keeping the e-reader itself featherlight on its own.
Once the new version of the Oasis came out I was too tempted not to upgrade. But despite the bigger screen, I missed the first-generation Oasis . The weight of the Oasis 1 with its cover was the same as the Oasis 2 without one.
I sold that Oasis to try reading on an iPad Mini — the arrival of True Tone on the fifth generation really convinced me to make the jump. That turned out to be a mistake: I struggled a lot with reading on the iPad in the dark, and I quickly missed my Kindle for outdoor reading sessions (by the pool — I love it 😍).
Getting back to this Paperwhite 2018 , I find it pretty polished. Add the genuine leather cover on top of that and you can take it anywhere without worrying about damaging it. I especially love that there’s no longer a bezel around the screen. The glass covers the entire e-reader, which makes it much easier to clean 🧼.
Battery life seems better than on the Oasis , except when I’m using 4G. The contrast is very good, and unless you put the two side by side, the Paperwhite is more than enough.
On the downside, the power button is really poorly placed at the bottom right — I’m always afraid of turning it off by accident.
The lack of a blue light filter is a real shortcoming, even though I keep the brightness at minimum.
Beyond that, it’s the ideal companion to take everywhere!
