Apple Watch: My Essential Apps
🤖 AI-generated summary
* The Apple Watch apps I use daily, from sport to productivity ⌚ * Spotify, Overcast, Drafts, Hevy: each one earns its place on the wrist * Wristrax to listen to your own Plex music without an iPhone 🎵

Whether you’re sporty or not, this article might be useful to you. I talked about the Apple Watch Ultra in a previous article. Here I’m focusing on apps. The first thing to do: set up your payment and loyalty cards. After that, here are the ones I use every day.

Spotify, the Swiss army knife

My number-one pick for music. Spotify’s advantage is that it brings together podcasts and music. Even if I complained about it back in the day, it’s convenient when you’re heading out for a run to switch between music and podcasts without changing apps.

The Apple Watch app works well, including standalone without an iPhone. For a quick running session, you launch your playlist and off you go.

Overcast, the podcast king

I also use Overcast for podcasts. It works with Apple Watch without needing to drag your iPhone along. What I love: smart playlists, voice enhancement, and the removal of sponsors at the beginning and end of episodes.

One downside though: I find it slow at syncing playlists with the iPhone. I’ll sometimes have already listened to a podcast on my phone but on the watch it still shows as unread. That’s its only flaw. And it’s free, so… If you’re also looking to summarize your podcasts , I cover that in another article.

Drafts, the inbox on your wrist

An essential app for capturing the thousand thoughts that pop into my head every second. Drafts is my favorite inbox, for those familiar with the Getting Things Done method. It opens fast, you dictate what you want, and it syncs with your iPhone. Most features are available in the free version. What more could you ask for.

Wristrax, Plex on the wrist

I’m testing Wristrax , which lets you play your own music from a Plex server. The idea is to not be dependent on Spotify for music you already own.

The one downside: you need to download the music to the watch before heading out for a run without your iPhone. No streaming for now. But for a planned outing, it does the job.

Hevy, the weightlifting and CrossFit tracker

For those who do weightlifting or CrossFit , Hevy lets you create routines and track your performance. You log your reps and weight directly on your wrist — fast and smooth. It absolutely blows away what Garmin offers for strength training tracking.
