Has it never happened to you — wanting to jot something down quickly while on a phone call 📞 in front of your Mac? Generally it’s a disaster: the person is still talking while you frantically search for the mouse to click on Notes and finally create a new note (in the wrong folder, so you’ll never find it next time you look for it).

I might have a solution that works for now on Mojave and hopefully will be more elegant on Catalina. The only requirement is having Keyboard Maestro installed.

You’ll be able to create this macro:

It’s not very elegant for now because there’s no way to navigate to a specific 📂 “notes” folder. Indeed, if you’ve opened the app and navigated to a particular folder, the macro will create the new note in whatever folder is currently open.

To work around this, I opted to close the Notes app and reopen it so that I’m in the right folder right from when the new note is created.

Of course, for this shortcut to be usable you need a fast Mac — on mine, closing and opening the app is instantaneous, so no problem!

If creating a note in the current folder doesn’t bother you, you can remove the close-app line.

From now on, when an idea comes to me, to avoid losing it I hit Command+Shift+N and the app opens with a new note 📝 right in front of me!

You’ll never lose an idea at your Mac again ⚡️
